Mobile Blogging (Moblog)

Have you heard about blogging from a mobile device, called moblogging?

At first thought, this sounds great -- whether you're in the middle of a road, or at the top of the Singapore Flyer, and you enter a quick blog entry from your phone, the convenience in sharing your thoughts with everyone virtually.

View this short podcast for a better understanding on the advantage of moblogging:

The video above has spoken about the advantage of Mobile blogging, let us now look into the disadvantage or shortcomings of this feature.
When you start thinking about it, doesn't it seem very tiring to enter text using a numeric keypad?

I know that many teenagers send many characters of SMS text to each other using only a numeric keypad, but comparing text messaging to blog entries is not really fair.

SMS messages are short and the people who use them have developed a skill which saves time and speeds up productivity. Blog entries, on the other hand, tend to be real prose, with long sentences and in many cases many paragraphs per blog entry.
If mobile blogging were to improve, it will most likely succeed on devices that have better input mechanisms than just a numeric keypad alone.

Apple Iphone, for example, has a keyboard-like mechanism when texting that makes it significantly easier to enter texts. Other device, like the BlackBerry also  includes a small QWERTY keyboard.
On the other hand, even if your phone isn't suitable for your posts, it may have a camera, and here I believe blogging and mobile devices can work together. It would be very convenient to be able to take pictures using your mobile phone, thereby uploading them directly to your blog.

You could add text later when you get to a computer with a keyboard or some may even allow you to add text after you have uploaded them..

One good example would be Flickr. It allows users to upload photos from their mobile devices now that, a page created for mobile blogging has been established.

Users could add in captions after uploading or they could also do so when they have a computer near them.
As for weblogging style, a well-known example would be blogger(blogspot) which caters to the posting of long essays by typing on a computer.

All in all, mobile blogging is not flawless, however, it solely depends on users' preference on the type of blogging methods that they wish to adopt.

Personally, I think that it would be beneficial if both types of blogging styles could be used one after another.

As we know, mobile blogging is able to compensate for the mobility factor that the normal blogging style lacks.

Then, the weblogging style can compensate for the hassle in typing long essays when needed.

  2. In my opinion, i believe the more traditional method of blogging which is Weblogging. I prefer it because it is less tiring and more efficient to type on a proper keyboard and blog on the Web. Come to think of it, I seldom see people blog on their phones. Most text and they use the short form words like you - u. If they were to use these short form words to blog, I don't think it will attract a lot of people. - Gerard Ong

  3. I agree to your saying that if blogs were to sound too informal, it will lose its popularity.

On the other hand, for the following example, would you choose to read outdated, nicely-typed information over fresh-from-oven, legibly-typed words?

Actually quite a couple of my friends, including myself, blog using our handphones, well in terms of Twitter because we want to share the happenings in brief with most of my classmates so, somehow i feel that it is very convenient for us to be using mobile blogging for words that needs to be spread quickly and efficiently and it gave us alot of mobility which Weblogging cannot cater for me.

  4. I will prefer Web Blogging as I can share more contents with readers such as videos, links and photos. Mobile blogging may be convenient, but mobile users mus also have wireless connection in order to do so. I have friends who mobile blog but their post are often very short. like Twitter posts.

I think Web blogging is still the most efficient way of blogging.

  6. Blogging on Twitter is acceptable because there are limited words one can write.
But I thought you meant blogging on sites like blogspot.com. That is way different. Still, I prefer Web blogging.

  7. I think both types of blogging are useful and bloggers could use both when apt. For example, when a blogger has more time to deliberate on an issue, he could use web blogging. It does not mean that you can't put up a longer post using mobile blogging - it's just that the circumstances (while on the move and using a handheld device) do not necc lend themselves to longer posts.
However, I don't think this is to be confused with Twitter, which is more like micro-blogging, which could also be done via web or mobile methods.
You have an interesting podcast - generally clear voice, though at times the audio track is a bit 'noisy'. What articles/sites did you read? You did not make your research apparent to us. Could you list your research here for us? Also, you could also make the post more reader-friendly by employing some scannable strategies.
Any specific examples you can show us of the various blogging types?

  8. I would prefer Web blogging as the keyboard is much bigger and i am more familiar and comfortable with it. I can type much faster with a keyboard than on the mobile phone which means that i will save more time. the letters in a mobile phone are small which makes it hard to see and press as well. -Ng Rui Yong

  9. For me, I think the reason some people are using Moblog is because while waiting for their friends outside the could blog about something. It's a very convenient way but if I have to choose between blogging using computer and using mobile, I'd prefer using computer as it is kind easier to share informations like photos, videos etc. as compared to mobile. Or maybe I'm just used to using computers. =)

  10. I think the actual webblogging is a much better option. People can type better and post better posts and at the same time do more research and make each and every one of their posts more personalized. I think Moblogging although an interesting concept and is more convenient is a pretty bad idea because it could lead to people constantly blogging and make them very detached from the real world. As it is we have services like facebook and twitter and already there have been cases of addicts. Just my two cents :)

  12. I would web-blog if I have a lot of things to say.
But for Mobile Blogging, I would just do it when I'm outside without a computer if I have a few stuffs to write, or perhaps just a summary to sum up things.
I even have trouble writing a single Facebook status or post using my iTouch while outside.

But if we're going for speed, I would go for Mobile Blogging.

  13. I think that we will see a rise in the popularity of mobile blogging as the percentage of smartphone and mobile internet device, increases.

The traditional form of blogging will probably not got the way of the dinosaur.Mobile blogging serves as a complement to traditional blog posts.Traditional blog posts are usually more in depth.
While mobile blogging usually provides information in bite sized chunks. It does have its advantages though as mentioned in this blog.

Convenience and real time updating are the selling points of mobile blogging.

  14. i think its not really fair to compare both type of blogging and see which is really the superior way to blog.its like comparing an apple and a pear just because both are fruits.i don't think the person who started webblogging had the intention to allow people to blog via their mobile phones.i also don't think the first person to mobileblog did it by typing a thousand word blog with paragraphs. Both form have their advantages and both are good in their own way.

  15. I would prefer mobile blogging as i have little things to say or talk about and i can blog as and when i like. As for web-blogging, it is where u settle down and start typing down about your daily life, what you have done, what interesting things you encountered. But in the first place, you must be FREE! So mobile blogging is still the best because i can blog anytime, anywhere.

  16. Hi everyone! So sorry for this late reply here. I've read all the comments and most of you have said that you would prefer weblogging instead of mobile blogging.

Actually, like what I've mentioned in my post, there's no right or wrong in your choices, I feel that its mainly on users' preference. Some may wish to type out their thoughts in proper essay format while some may only prefer to keep it real short and simple to let users get the gist.

Well, personally, I would have to agree that I also prefer weblogging as it gives me the proper platform for me to string my thoughts together in one essay or rather afew paragraphs.

However, if i were to be on the go, hopping around places, I may use moblog as it provides a convenient method for me to post short information that I would like to share with everyone.

    a brief summary:
I feel that, weblogging lets readers read proper sentences and get the information in detailed form as they go along the paragraphs. But moblog, contains short phrases that provides the gist of the information shared.

Have anyone of you tried moblogging? And what kind of moblog do you use?

  17. I think it all boils down to each particular situation and equipment you have at that time. if you were outside the whole day, you would prefer mobile blogging as it is the only method available and you and your friends can share various thoughts on the different events that are being attended

but if you were already at home you WOULD prefer web blogging, as we are already comfortable with keyboards and we have a big screen :D

  18. Mobile blogging will be useful if the message you intend to post is short, like a short tweet. However, if you want to post something you have a lot to say and also requires proper formatting, then conventional blogging is obviously the better choice.

  19. I feel that mobile blogging is very useful when you are on a train or waiting in line for something that might take more than 15 minutes.
It still comes down to whether you are a hardcore blogger or not.

I would love it if i have a date plan :(

  20. I still prefer web blogging more than mobile, Mobile is like twitter using 'twitlonger'. but it is useful if youre going to post just a summary of lets say 'what you did today' but other than that, real bloggers, they type alot with alot2 of pictures. so web blogging for me is a much better option. -Rozaidi
